Greta Christina has a post about Creationists (and woo practitioners) “moving the goalposts.”
(Moving the goalposts is) commonly seen in the form of, “To prove evolution, you need to find a transitional fossil between Thing 1 and Thing 2… okay, now you have to find a transitional fossil between Thing 1 and Thing 1.5…
What Dawkins mentions in video 1 (of 7) is something that I never thought about before. When science fills a “gap” (in fossil evidence, for example), TWO new gaps are created. Using Greta’s example, one gap between 1 and 1.5 AND a second gap between 1.5 and 2. It’s down-right dastardly! >:O
since I like opportunities to laugh at stupid people (because I’m prejudiced against morons…which I know is wrong…but it just feels so right)…I thoroughly enjoyed the video series.
I’ll give it to Dawkins – - he sure does have the ability to exploit stupid. love it. go R.D.
I wouldn’t say that the woman in the videos is stupid, because she’s obviously somewhat intelligent. The problem is, as Dawkins continued to point out, that she, and those with whom she partners and shares belief, are obviously motivated by their own biases. It’s not that she isn’t smart enough to get what he’s saying but that she willfully believes otherwise because the truth does not correspond with her “truth.”
I find it interesting that she continues to discuss her view of people as created as they are and therefore worthy of respect and being treated well. The interesting part for me is that I know of Concerned Women for America as a very hostile group toward homosexuals. Everyone should be treated with respect unless they are gay apparently.
As an atheist – and former Christian homeschooling parent – I blog (mostly) about the social-political aspects of religious fundamentalism, especially as it impacts the education and socialization of children.
“Creationist Training Video” was left until the end?
Thanks, Meg, for pointing that out. I just updated my post with the (surreal) video that prompted this one. :)
I couldn’t get past the first 3 minutes of part 1, let alone wade through 7 parts of her vapid, cheesy, breathy, miss-america-smiling, drivel.
Ye gads! I’m not so sure it’s her creationist training that’s so nauseating… more like her Stepford lobotomy.
lol – I could only make it half-way through vid 2.
I think a Stepford lobotomy is a condition of employment at Concerned Women for America. :)
I don’t want to survive if I have to end up looking like the empty-headed blonde. :)

I don’t think he was exploiting stupid. I think he just let stupid keep talking, which kind of means stupid exposed herself.

Hi, Jennifer.
I’m very impressed that you were able to make it through the series! :D I give Dawkins credit, too. He practices restraint as an art form. :)
Audrey,
I think “he just let stupid keep talking,” too. :)

Sam,
Good point about CWA and this woman’s tripe about respecting other people. How transparent.
