About me
As an atheist – and former Christian homeschooling parent – I blog (mostly) about the social-political aspects of religious fundamentalism, especially as it impacts the education and socialization of children.

I’ve seen guys like Jay before. There was even an element of them in the EO church: punks turned monks. I don’t understand how these guys say that they’ve discovered that Jesus is all about unconditional love and forgiveness…have they read the same bible?? How do they focus only on the fluff and ignore the stuff that very clearly alienates and oppresses and divides? Either it’s god’s revelation and is all true or all of it is rubbish.
I think it’s great that he is standing up and publicly supporting gay rights but it’s also important to realize that he isn’t saying anything actually different…I’m sure he still believes they are sinners that he’s trying to “love” into repentance. Part of why I left the church is because I realized that any religion that teaches that homosexuality is wrong, even if they say that you can be born gay and live celibate and therefor be okay, follows a seriously fucked up god.
This is the first time I’ve encountered this guy, so I don’t know anything about him. Looks like he does some of his own thinking, though. I’d be curious to check in on him in five or ten years. Hopefully, by then, his conscience will have led him from dipping a toe in the water to, erm, swimming?…sailing?… jet-skiing his way out of Christianity altogether. [Darn those water metaphors :P]
You really don’t know who Jay is?? He’s Jim and Tammy Faye’s boy. He “left god” after the scandal and got into drugs, etc and then later got saved. If that shit didn’t turn him off for good, I don’t know what would.
Oh, thanks, Michelle! I didn’t know either but I should’ve caught it, from the double-k spelling.
Jim and Tammy Faye’s boy? I didn’t even know they had a son :P
