Can We Be Good Without God?

You see, without God, morality itself loses meaning. Christians know we can learn about how to live from the way God designed us. But without God, we can’t think of ourselves as designed at all. In fact, the evolutionist says that “man is the result of a purposeless and natural process that did not have us in mind.” If that’s so, then morality and human nature are mere accidents of evolution.
So instead of caring for our children, we might be choose [sic] to eat them, the way guppies do. Why not? If morality is an accident of evolution, who can say that this would be wrong?

I eat my children because I don't know Jesus.

But aren’t guppies also one of God’s creation?
Good point. And, fish (like all animals) were friendly herbivores — until Woman ate of the apple; if fact, guppies would still be Sinless if it weren’t for human beings. And, yet, Mr. Colson snidely suggests that humans are more “moral” than guppies. Tsk, tsk.
And, because it’s Monday, I’ve posted a picture of a COD fish, for your enjoyment. :)

We know little enough about how humans think and choose right behaviors, let alone animals! I was just reading about this in the Sunday NYT, btw, waiting for Favorite Daughter at her vocal coaching session:
Good Dog, Smart Dog
Wouldn’t it be fine if we could get to “good fundy, smart fundy” as the social default, a norm and expectation of humanity helping rather than humanity judging, condemning and punishing?
Aaaaaahhhhh — a killer guppy! Ruuuuun!!!!
Oh, never mind. . . :)
Nance
For example, Rep. Virginia Fox said today that she believes there’s more to fear from the passage of health care reform as crafted by our own self-governing American majority, than from any TERRORIST anywhere on earth!!! Not a very good or smart thing to believe much less say publicly, and it won’t help anyone in desperate need to get it either I believe any DOG could do better than this Foxx . . .
Crazy like a Foxx

Right, because God’s never told anyone to kill his own children…
Thanks for posting this. It’s full of fun.
Back more literally to THIS post — Dale must be prescient, and I quote literal child-eating God morality from his latest post (Dale’s, not God’s — the Christian god hasn’t posted in millennia!):
Sooner or later it all comes back around to atheists eating babies, doesn’t it?
so…just had to go and read the entire post….
“Apart from God, we have no reason to take morality seriously.”
Now, this is a prime example of why I can’t seem to shake my prejudice (that I fully acknowledge) against stupid people.
So, beyond the entire breadth and depth of all the great minds who labored over the very issue of good vs. evil and the concept of morality within the frameworks of classical literature, philosophy, sociology, cultural anthropology (to name but a few) – – and the latest break-throughs regarding neurobiology and our own cultural evolution; we have no reason to take morality seriously unless we believe in some ghost in the machine?
Really. Really? And will Zeus be pulling the sun across the sky today…or do I need to go hold down a virgin for him at lunch time. Cause I’m pretty busy today and I don’t need that pressure.

JJ,
Thanks for the link to Dale’s thoughtful and beautifully written Unconditional Love of Reality. What a contrast to the simple-minded twaddle of Chuck Colson.
Jennifer:
Great point. After all that, it comes down to mommy guppies.

1. an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason.
I think we have enough knowledge, thought, or reason to declare Mr. Colson “stupid.” ;)
Meanie:
I hadn’t thought about it, but, yes, apparently. :)

Yes, God sure is a big fan of cannibalism. Here he is cursing Israelites, “then you shall eat the offspring of your own body, the flesh of your sons and of your daughters whom the LORD your God has given you” (Deut 28:53). The next verse further condemns Israelite women to eating their newborns – and afterbirth! Ah, the Bible. Such beautiful literation.
JJ:
Ohhh, her. I’ve been trying to remember who she is. She’s the one who claims that the idea that Matthew Shepard was murdered for being gay is “a hoax on the American people.” What a horrible person.
