I’ve been suggesting that older American patriots who think that Goverment-Run Healthcare Programs are “bad for America” should put their money where their mouths are and burn their Medicare cards.
“But, we have already paid for our benefits in taxes.”
Well, no, not really. The amount you’ll receive in benefits will far exceede the amount you contributed in taxes.
In his article, Have Seniors Really Paid For Their Medicare Benefits?, Andrew Biggs looks at “a typical person who was born in 1944, began work at age 21 in 1965, and in 2009 retired at age 65 and enrolled in Medicare” – and does the math. After subtracting out Medicare payroll taxes and premiums paid over the retiree’s lifetime, each willl receive an additional $108,915 in benefits!!

In other words, there’s no longer anything standing between your Medicare card and the backyard bonfire that I’ll be building tonight with friends. We’ll be expecting you. Around nine-ish?

And don’t forget about the kids and grandkids yet to be born, that the protesters go on about:
“The reality is that kids like Trig Palin make just about the most compelling case possible for health care reform. ”
Devil’s advocate — but, Trig Palin isn’t a compelling case. He has family wealthy enough to not give a shit about other people having access to healthcare.
Pretty sure the phrase “kids like Trig Palin” means with like lifetime medical needs, not alike in family circumstance. I’d venture that few American families will be “like” Trig Palin’s in other ways and that’s likely a good thing for all of us. . .
Speaking of Family:
[smile] Very interesting.
And these numbers continue to blow my mind.

Truly, Trig’s bad luck extends far beyond anything health insurance can cover.

And shouldn’t it be “BYO?” :)
Nance
Ooops. Thanks Nance! :) You’re right, BYU should be BYO! Was my brain thinking BJU? Or, was it just not thinking at all? Maybe it’s because of the misspelling that nobody showed up last night :(
Oh, poor Lynn! Were you lonely? Did you wind up having to watch this instead?
(I’m thinking Kanye West would be perfect to fill Joe Wilson’s seat from SC!)
JJ,
I didn’t see the show, but I do like to see wrongs righted, so thanks for the video link. If Joe Wilson is ever booed from the stage and ousted from politics, feel free to send that one, too. :)
Hope everyone has read this by Matt Taibbi?
Rolling Stone: Sick and Wrong
That MUST be the reason, Lynn. Otherwise, I’m sure all those good Muricans would have been flocking to your door. :)
