Nobody knows for sure what the ominous music being heard nationwide could mean,… though it’s safe to assume that it has something to do with President Obama and his wicked plans for our country! Actually, now that I’ve had time to think about it more, it does seem rather odd that the music began just days before the president is to address the nation’s schoolchildren in what is widely recognized as nothing more than a bold, Hitlerian move to steer our youth into lives of amoral socialism!

How do you, as a homeschooling parent, feel about it?
That’s such an interesting question :) The view of public schools as places of indoctrination is pretty common among homeschoolers so, generally, as a group (even divided into two: religious conservatives and secular unschooler types), they’d be more inclined to be view the speech critically. I think I see it less as a “homeschooler” and more as a pragmatist, however.
Through my rose-colored glasses, I see a speech which is meant to encourage personal responsibility and active (vs. passive) goal setting. Maybe it’s a possible first step in addressing the anti-intellectualism that’s becoming so popular – and actually fueling these backlash movements.
What are your thoughts?
Some fundie homeschoolers are outraged at this, too. Or, maybe all the fundies are … I don’t know them all.
Anyway, I believe they are alarmist about it because they feel threatened when someone considers children as people worthy of speaking to like they were fellow human beings.
Hi Audrey,
I haven’t spent time going there… yet! >:) …but, it’s stunningly hypocritcal of Christian evangelicals to make these arguments given their relentless attempts to gain access to schools in order to proselytize to other people’s children – without “opt-out” forms signed by parents – or even the parents’ knowledge…
